Seeding After Care

Seeding Tips for a Healthy, Lush Lawn
Consistent watering is the most important factor in successful grass seed germination. As soon as overseeding is complete, begin watering immediately with a light, even application. The goal is to keep the top layer of soil consistently moist so the seed can properly germinate and establish.
In most conditions, watering twice per day is recommended—once in the morning and once in the afternoon—especially if there is no rainfall. You do not need long watering sessions; short, frequent watering is more effective. Focus on keeping the top ¼ inch of soil moist at all times across the entire seeded area.
If your schedule does not allow for manual watering, an automatic irrigation timer is highly recommended. Set the system to run brief cycles in the morning and again later in the day. Many timers allow scheduling for multiple days, making it easier to maintain consistent moisture levels. Even after new grass begins to emerge—typically within 4 to 5 days—continue the watering routine to support strong root development.

Mowing New Grass
Newly seeded lawns require careful mowing practices to avoid damaging young grass. Once the existing lawn begins to recover and reaches approximately 2½ to 3 inches in height, it is safe to mow the entire area, including the newly germinated grass.
For the first few weeks, maintain a mowing height of about 2½ to 3 inches. This helps protect young seedlings while encouraging steady growth. During this early establishment period, it is beneficial to collect grass clippings when mowing. Removing clippings allows more sunlight to reach the new grass and reduces competition for nutrients.
It is also important to keep leaves and debris off newly seeded areas, as they can block sunlight and slow growth. Maintaining a clean, lightly mulched surface will support healthier and more consistent lawn establishment.
